Adelaide is a very similar town in spirit and amenities as Bedford. It is larger in population and administration as it leads the two towns. The town is situated on the main route from Bedford to Bisho, the Hogsback and ultimately East London and the Wild Coast. The distance between the two towns is only 20 km on a very good road.
Adelaide has a pretty river, the Koonap running past it and the properties along this frontage are sought after. Many of the roads are tarred. There are numerous game farms and lodges in the district and the local community supports the town well.
There is a very active High Technical School of good quality. The town sports a modern supermarket recently upgraded, local vegetable and fish shops, a new gym for the fitness fanatics and a great hairdresser for all needs.
Midgely’s Hotel is a landmark in the town with it’s wonderful old style architecture. It is the local watering hole and offers a great steak in the evenings. There are good B&B’s in the town. The Heritage Museum is well worth a visit with its many treasures and artifacts. The garden has recently bee re-designed with the older roses.
The Adelaide semi-private Hospital is a gem for the community and is well run and fantastically supported by the community. Fund raising month is September and both Adelaide and Bedford bandy together to keep the standards high. One is treated as a special patient in this hospital and the medical expertise is of a high standard.
Adelaide is actively involved in tourism and also has a CTO which works with Bedford CTO to form one committee at a higher level which can access funding from the local Municipality. The garden festival incorporates Adelaide as well.
